The trademark of Jakarta, these days, seems to be its shopping malls. There are a plethora of them located all around Central Jakarta, catering to every taste and budget.
The National Monument is unmissible. The tall, angular tower contains a worthwhile observation desk and a mildly interesting museum. This is the most recognizable landmark in Jakarta. Perhaps the most pleasant historic location is the cemetery dedicated to important historical figures who died during the Dutch colonial period. If you know about Indonesia’s history, or want to learn about it, the cemetery itself is interesting. However, the green, peaceful grounds of the site are in direct contrast to the busy streets outside.Central also bears some other stereotypical Indonesian sights and activities. Pool halls are found all around Central. Shooting pool is very nearly a national pastime in Indonesia. Simply watching or joining in, even if your pool skills are humble, can be fun. It sports a reasonably good food court and a cinema.Baru Market (Pasar Baru) is one of the oldest establishments in Central Jakarta. It was formed in Dutch times and continues to be a bustling venue of commerce. Everything is for sale here, even quality electronics and textiles. Bargaining is expected.Because it is the central area of Indonesia’s largest city, Central Jakarta has a cosmopolitan flare when it comes to cuisine. American chain restaurants like Chili’s, KFC, and Baskin Robbins compete against local restaurants and vendors for attention. Local food courts in malls and markets offer cheap alternatives to these restaurants. Satay, skewered and grilled meat (beef, goat), is a popular street snack. Central Jakarta is the heart of Indonesia’s biggest city. North, East, South, and West Jakarta have their own attractions and atmospheres.
