Sichuan's Laid-Back Capital

Chengdu is the capital of China’s Sichuan province. Known abroad for its spicy and hearty cuisine, Sichuan is one of China’s wealthiest provinces, mainly because of its success in agriculture.

Aside from food and farming, Area’s near Chengdu are home to China’s most famous animal, the Giant Panda. The lush forests offer the perfect habitat for this much publicized endangered species. A Panda research center can be reached conveniently from Chengdu. This is an working site on which Pandas are studied. Whether the base is for profit or is legitimately working to help and understand these animals is open to interpretation.

Even inside the city, there are opportunities to appreciate nature. Culture Park and Pavilion Park (near Sichuan University) are both recommended for their extensive grounds and the small pagodas built within the parks. People’s Park is a more bustling and attraction filled place with a highly recommended teahouse. It is a good place to bring children because of its playground and carnival type atmosphere. Local people can often be seen taking their wedding photos against the backdrop of the park.

Chengdu has a reputation for being one of the funnest cities in China. It reportedly has the highest number of teahouses, cafes, and bars per capita in all of China. Teahouses are recommended for a quieter experience, while visitors can experience Chengdu’s laid back, happy-go-lucky atmosphere at the ever-changing lineup of bars and cafes scattered around the city.

There is also a taste of spectacle to be had. Sichuanese Opera is a popular form of entertainment for tourists. There is singing, though the emphasis is on spectacle (including fire-spitting and the occasional feat of acrobatics. It is quite a unique theater experience, to say the least.

Qing Shiquao Market is one the best places to shop or just take in the atmosphere and sights. The area selling songbirds is definitely worth checking out. There is plenty on sale, so just wandering is bound to bring you to some interesting sights.
