Chiang Rai
56Gateway to the Golden Triangle
Chiang Rai is the biggest city in the (im)famous region known as The Golden Triangle. This is the most convenient place to begin a trek into the border regions. The main attraction is, of course, the scenic landscapes. There are also oppurtunities to trek into hill tribe areas, and take in these people’s colorful and little seen culture. The town of Chiang Rai itself is a busy, but atmospheric place. As the center of the region’s activity, the town itself has a lot to see.Within the city, there are several temples worth a visit. Phra Kaew Temple is a wooden structure that houses a much-revered jade statue of Buddha. The statues on the outside of the temple are quite stunning. The decorations, including several murals, of Jet Yot Pagoda are quite intricate and interesting. Doi Tung Temple is one of the oldest in the area and has the most beautiful surroundings of any temple north of Chiang Mai.The main reason most tourists head to Chiang Rai is to trek in the mountains. It is possible to rent a motorcycle and cruise the region on your own, though some travel companies arrange both motorcycle and hiking tours. Remember, The Golden Triangle has a reputation as a haven for lawlessness. While this is usually over-stated, it is good to be careful, especially when heading far from the beaten trail. Booking a tour, or at least trekking or riding with someone who has experience in the region is a good idea. That said, some of the most unbelievable views in all of Thailand are found in the hills and mountains outside Chiang Rai. The rugged, but beautiful land is something that everyone should see on a trip to northern Thailand. Guesthouses and travel agencies can help book or plan a trip. It might be a good idea to spend a couple days in Chiang Rai, asking other tourists for recommendations on which company provides good service. Some might even be able to recommend a specific guide. Chiang Rai’s Night market is one of the more interesting Night Markets in all of Thailand. Colorful hill tribe handcrafts are for sale, as is silk. The eating in the Night Market is cheap and always interesting. Occasionally, there are folk dance and music performances at the market. There are several eateries and nightspots catering to tourists. These provide typical backpacker fare as well as a place to socialize. Chiang Rai is a colorful city, and the perfect base for your trekking adventures into the Golden triangle.
