Exploring China: Guilin

Guilin is one of China’s boomtowns. More of a manufacturing and commercial center than n a tourist destination, the city is a good place to see both natural scenery and also get a glimpse of modern China’s much talked about economy. However, both the city center and the areas around the city offer some spectacular sightseeing opportunities.

Guilin has some very good noodle dishes, which are served from street stalls throughout the city. There is a walking street around the center of the city that is virtually lined with eateries. Some of the best dishes are fish or shrimp from the nearby Li River. The street near the Li River itself is a good place for shoppers to browse and maybe find something to eat. Many tourists have complained of scams, so be careful when purchasing anything.

Also along the river is one of the more unique sights in China. Fishermen use Cormorant birds to catch fish. The birds retrieve the fish, but are unable to swallow them because the fishermen have placed a piece of wire around their throat. This usually takes place in the evening along the Li River.

The river outside the city provides some of the most stunning scenery in China. Cruises can be set up through many hotels and travel agencies. The limestone cliffs and quaint bamboo rafts make this a favorite cruise of tourists both domestic and foreign. Most boat tours conclude in Yangshou, a small town that surpasses Guilin in natural beauty. There is quite a tourist industry here, complete with a nightlife scene and good accommodations. Moon Hill, Dragon Head Hill, and Green Lotus Peak are three natural spots that offer great views of the surrounding countryside. There is a network of caves running under these hills. There are numerous shopping opportunities in Yangshou at the huge market.

While the countryside is inviting, those interested in modern China might enjoy strolling through the city. Aside from modern manufacturing, there are still bamboo and jade craftsmen of considerable skill. Beware when buying these items. Buying directly from craftsmen will ensure a higher quality.

Simply taking a hike outside Guilin is another way to see some great scenery. Diecai Mountain is a good place to get some views of the city. Similarly, Fubo Mountain has splendid views and also some temples from the Qing Dynasty that warrant a visit. Renting a bicycle and riding around the countryside is convenient and relatively safe.

Guilin is not a tourist mecca, but its surroundings are some of the most beautiful in southern China.

Guilin is certainly one of the most suggested vacation places. I liked Yangshuo better, i found it's more interesting.
