Exploring China: Guizhou

Despite its status as one of the least developed provinces in China, Guizhou is one of the most naturally scenic and ethnically diverse regions in China. Though the weather, especially the heavy monsoonal rains, can be a variable for travelers, the mountains and villages that cover most of the province are attractive in any weather.

Guiyang is the provincial capital of Guizhou. It boasts a mild climate and a culturally diverse, modern feel. There are several gardens of note in the city, and also some places to purchase handcrafted goods made by the provinces hill tribe peoples. Qianling Mountain Park is a beautiful and expensive park outside the city, while Riverbank Park offers more action with its large Ferris wheel and carnival atmosphere.

Anshun, two hours from Guiyang via road, is a place to find an old quarter (there is one in Guiyang, though it is fast disappearing in favor of new development). It is worth it to spend a day wandering around Anshun. The old style wooden buildings and quiet, narrow streets have a kind of “Old-China/ The way it used to be” feel to them. Mostly, though, Anshun is a good place to begin a journey to Huanggoushu Pubu. The beautiful scenery and colorful Bouyei people make this the one “can’t miss” part of a trip to Guizhou Province. The Baishuio River tumbles down no less than a dozen waterfalls. It is possible to visit the falls and even take a dip in the pools below some of them.

There are tours leaving from various parts of the Province to visit the minority areas. Kaili, three hours from Guiyang, is a good place to start. The Miao tribe lives around this city. Visitors are able to get some background on these tribes at the Kaili Minorities Museum in town. There are minibuses that run throughout the region. Getting a local guide is a good idea when visiting the villages in the countryside. Travelers should also note that there are many festivals during the year, many in the springtime. Some of the hill tribe festivals can be quite boisterous and colorful. It is possible to organize a home stay in a village in places like Kaili or Anshun.

Just getting from place to place in Guizhou can be enjoyable, the lush green mountains and quaint roadside villages mean there are sights everywhere. This truly is one of the more diverse regions in China, and worth a visit to see the life of China’s less known peoples.
