Semarang: Java's Metropolis

Tourists who are seeking real Java will not be disappointed by Semarang, Central Java’s capital. A mix of many different cultures marks this place. The historic buildings of Dutch colonial rule are still evident, as are the evidence of the modern (skyscrapers, high-rise condo buildings). The major tourist destination of Yogyakarta is only a few hours away from Semarang, making it an easy and worthwhile stopping off point.

The “Old Town” is located in the northern area of Semarang. This is where the port was located during Dutch colonial times. Remnants of this period in history are seen is the old churches and some of the older buildings in this area. Tawang Train Station is one of the oldest in the area, and is worth a visit to see the architecture.

Simpang Lima is where it all happens in Semarang. This enormous square has numerous places to eat, enjoy some nightlife, or simply people watch. This is a great place to hang out in the evenings.

Ronggowarsito is a museum worth checking out if you are interested in Javanese culture. This museum has several interesting exhibits, as well as a good collection of Javanese art work.

Because Semarang is near Yogyakarta, it is possible to visit the massive Borobudur temple complex (about an hour a way). This Buddhist temple is one of the oldest and most magnificent in Java. Prambanan is the Borobudur’s Hindu equivalent. There are dance performances here during the dry season. Both temples are worth a visit for their beauty, size, and historical significance.

Pasar Johar is the best place in town to buy souvenirs, handcrafts, and Indonesia’s famous Batik textiles. To experience a modern mall, Ciputra Mall is your best bet, though there are several others around town.

Bukit Sari is a cool, hilly area outside the city. It is a great place to spend a day or more, cruising around, drinking tea at roadside shops. On the way to this area, there are some great spots to stop of and appreciate some great views of Semarang from the hillside. Semarang is known around Java for being one of the more beautiful and natural cities on the island.

Ho Cheng was a famous Chinese Muslim who was one of the main contributors to the strong ties between Java and the Chinese. Sampokong Temple is a monument to him and his contributions. It is built in Chinese style, and it quite a beautiful and popular place to visit.

Though Semarang might not provide the historical and atmospheric experience of nearby Yogyakarta, it has its own charms and is a worthwhile stopping off point on a trip around Java.
