Thailand's Isaan Region

Ubon Ratchathani, usually referred to by only its first name, is a town in the Isaan Region of Northern Thailand, near Laos. This quiet town is a good place for travelers to base themselves when exploring the region. The charms of the city are mainly found in its southern half, which is nearer to the Mae Nam River, which is Thailand’s second longest.

The best attraction in town is the Ubon National Museum. For a provincial museum, this one is quite good, offering plenty of information about area, which was once one of the most important in Thailand. The museum shows the diversity of Thailand’s history in exhibits about Khmer and Lao contributions to the area as well as several hundred years of Thai power in the area. Some of the artifacts date back well over two thousand years.

Wat Nong Pah Pong is a forest monastery and temple in Ubon. One of Thailand’s most respected Buddhist teachers, Ajahn Chah, made his home here. There is a simple exhibit as well as some relics related to the holy man. Wat Jaeng is a bit more spectacular when it comes to architecture. The carvings on the outside of the pavilion are quite ornate and beautiful. Wat Thung Si Muang has a pagoda, which has some wonderful murals.

While the biggest tourist attractions in Isaan are the temples, there are a lot of other activities to be found. While a good deal quieter than Bangkok, or even Chiang Mai, Ubon has a few nightlife spots that get going on weekends. U-Bar is the trendiest and most popular spot. There are also some night markets in town. By night, I mean all night. The Big Market is near the river and serves up good street food. Given its diverse history, it’s no surprise to see the influence various cuisines have on the food in Ubon. There are French, Lao, and Vietnamese eateries in the heart of town.

Pha Taem National Park is a two-hour ride outside of Ubon. The big attraction here is the ancient rock paintings on a cliff inside the park. The natural attractions are also worth a peek. There are rooms for rent in the park as well, allowing visitors to commit to exploring the park without having to worry about the return trip to Ubon.

Admittedly, Isaan is not the most attraction filled region in Thailand, but towns like Ubon offer up quiet charms and are actually quite a bit more modern than they are given credit for.
