Little Known Backpackers' Scene in Laos

Vang Vieng is a tiny, three-streets-wide town. It is a four-hour ride from Vientiane, and lies on the main road to Luang Prabang and the Thai border. Travelers making the overland trip through Laos will find some interesting sights and experiences in Vang Vieng.

There is actually a bit of a backpacker scene in Vang Vieng. Praise should be given to the locals for their ingenuity in making a town that was little more than a bus stop into a major stop on the tourist trail. At the very least, there are some clean and cheap guesthouses that could serve as a stopover point on the trip to or from Luang Prabang.

The limestone rock formations along the river on which Vang Vieng is located are the town major sight. Ingenious local companies offer inner tube rides down the river. There are small stopping off point along the ride, which offer refreshments (beer, mostly) and a place to get out and perhaps chat with other tourists. The limestone cliffs are quite scenic, if not overly spectacular. For non-inner tube enthusiasts, Kayaking and canoeing are also offered.

The people of Vang Vieng are quite friendly. A stop into a café or restaurant might lead to a conversation, and perhaps even a bout of drinking. There will probably be other backpackers in town, so a bit of socializing always finds its way on the agenda. There are some café style bars serving alcohol and providing some good, if not current, tunes. And, of course, this being a backpacker stop in Southeast Asia, there are the requisite pizza shops and pancake breakfast places. A bit of wandering will reveal some wonderful little local food joints. Some of the restaurants catering to foreigners serve up a movie in the evening along with the grub.

Vang Vieng is nearly halfway between Vientiane and Luang Prabang. Luang Prabang being a couple hours further. A mini-bus is the best option for the trip, although it is a little more expensive than a regular local bus. The dependable air-conditioning and extra space these rides provide makes it well worth the extra couple of dollars. This is one of the best places to stop along the way. Even if you are not traveling with a group, there will probably be other travelers in town that will add to the friendly feel of the place. Some tourists have liked the easy-going style of Vang Vieng that they have stayed for several weeks, or longer.
