West Jakarta

West of Central Jakarta is home to Indonesia’s busiest Chinatown. A wide range of restaurants and karaoke joints might be the most unmistakable parts of this area of Jakarta, but a closer look will reveal one of the most culturally diverse and vibrant parts of the massive metropolis that is Jakarta.
Probably one of the more unique sites in West Jakarta, at least from a traveler’s point of view, is the Skyrink, one of a handful of ice skating rinks within the tropics. This makes it more of a novelty that a tourist destination, although it might be nice to try your hand at skating as a way to avoid the blazing daytime heat. This is Jakarta, after all, so you can expect a good choice of shopping malls (and the requisite KFC). Taman Anggrek Mall, which houses the ice rink mentioned above, is probably the most popular place in West Jakarta when it comes to shopping, or simply hanging out. There are some decent deals at the complex’s department stores. There is also a cinema. For a little more culture, head to the Jakarta History Museum. Besides the informative, if a little dull, exhibits, the building itself is a piece of history, dating back to Dutch colonial times. The Puppet Museum (Museum Wayang) is a bit more colorful, and has some interesting exhibits on the uniquely Indonesian take on puppet theater. Over the noon hour, traditional shadow puppet performances are given. These are surprisingly authentic and include a live orchestra accompanying the show with Indonesian folk music. Cafe Batavia is a upscale venue for eating and swilling. The atmosphere is sublime in the dimly lit rooms. There is another place upstairs. The building is worth a look; though a few cocktails and a meal will certainly lighten your wallet considerably. There are several other historic sights around West Jakarta. A memorial to a more recent event is the one at Trisakti University that commemorates the killing of four students during a 1998 democracy demonstration. Violence erupted throughout the city following the killings, which were allegedly carried out by police snipers. Aside from the monument, the grounds of the University are rather pleasant for an afternoon stroll. Eating at the food courts of the local malls even has a flare of authenticity. Bakmi GM is a fast food chain known for their cheap and tasty noodle dishes. Local delicacies like satay are also on offer at many places.
