Zhuang in China
72
With a population of nearly 18 million, the Zhuang are the largest ethnic minority in China. Most Zhuang people live in Guangxi Zhuang Region which is in Southern China. Chinese authorities have given the people in this region a certain level of autonomy. This happened despite the fact that the area of modern China where the Zhuang peoples live has always been a place of conflict and rebellion.
The Zhuang have their own language and an unique culture. The language uses a roman alphabet and recent efforts have been made to publish literature. In fact, quite a large amount of material has been published in the Zhuang language.
Also in recent years, the people of Guangxi have shaken off poverty and taken advantage of government aid to the rural poor. Agriculture and manufacturing continue to develop and infrastructure continues to be improved. Despite this, there are still questions about the human rights of all of China’s ethnic minorities.
The Zhuang people are have an animist religion, although, like many other ethnicities, ancestors hold an important place in their religion. There are several annual festivals to celebrate and remember ancestors.
Folk arts also hold a special place in Zhuang culture. Aside from literature (mentioned above), many women are skilled in weaving. Other handmade items like carpets, clothing, blankets, and window shades are popular in local and regional markets. Some are even exported and sold in specialty shops.
Music and dance are important parts of Zhuang culture. The bronze drum, a uniquely Zhuang instrument, can be heard at all festivals and is usually played to accompany dancing. There is also a Singing Festival held each year. This is a festival held in honor of a legendary folk figure known as Sister Liu. People celebrate by singing songs, which are often improvised and usually humorous. This festival takes place on the 3rd day or the 3rd lunar month.
Traditionally, the people of this ethnic group live in the country. Many still do, involving themselves in agriculture or handicrafts. To visit many of these country villages requires a guide. Zhuang people are known for being friendly to outsiders. Guilin and Nanning, the region’s major cities, also have some performances of Zhuang music and dance. Zhuang handicrafts are available in many of the city’s markets. Because of their long history in China, many Zhuang are assimilated with other Chinese groups in these urban areas. Viewing a performance in one of these cities is a good way to become familiar with the diversity of China’s people without having to venture into the countryside. Visiting a traditional Zhuang village will require a guide, but will also put you in contact with some of the most hospitable and fun-loving folks in all of China.
